Introduction
James Leach took over the reins of Super Play for issue 12 and brought with him an specially extended Fantasy Quest section providing an explanation of the different types of RPG and featured some of the latest games like Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire. They also reviewed a couple of RPG’s: Dungeon Master scored 88% and Lagoon a pitiful 56%. Games like Ogre Battle and Mystic Quest were also previewed at the end of the feature.
News this month looked into Game Prices, and why the UK seemed to be one of the worlds worst markets for game prices - however all this seemed to be changing with the news that Mario All-Stars and Goof Troop were going for an RRP of £49.99. They also had a look at both Konami and Namco’s lineups for 1994, including the impressive Turles: Tournament Fighters, Legend of the Mystical Ninja 2 and Battlecars. Peter Evans came up with another host of gems from Japan and they also looked at several innovations from Nintendo. The team also gave their predictions for the next 12 months as Super Play was a year old.
Another game scoring well this month was the UK version of unusual top down shoot-em up Zombies Ate My Neighbours, which Zy scored at 89% - praising the innovation on offer. Rock ‘n’ Roll Racing scored a similar 88%, with Cam Whinstanley praising the graphics and uniqueness of the concept. Sunset Rider also scored 87% and Out to Lunch scored 84%, showing that the SNES was due for a superb Autumn.
This month the team covered the first part of the players guide for Super Mario Collection, basically walking you through the entirety of the first Mario Bros game. Jonathan Davies took over Gamefreak for this issue, covering more details on import games. They covered Street Fighter II Turbo within a free guide book, and also some hints and tips within the magazine itself. Super Play Classic for this month was the excellent Super Castlevania IV, scoring 91%.
