Introduction
Mario proudly presented the brand new Wii U tablet on the cover of this issue, as they presented over 30 pages of new information on Nintendo’s forthcoming console.. Key games like Assassin's Creed III and Call of Duty were also featured
Their first big story this month looked at the lasting legacy of the Wii and its impact on the future of gaming with its replacement imminent. In Greener’s column he wrote about how the time being right to incorporate achievements into the Nintendo scene. As well as the Wii U news, they also looked at Skylanders, which was set to take the gaming world by storm with their amiibo-like collectable interactive figurines. There was also an interview with Camelot’s main man Hiroyuki Takahashi, covering his experience of 12 years developing Mario Sports titles.
There were plenty of new games previewed in this issue, with Castlevania: Mirror of Fate and Pokemon Black and White 2 were the big previews on 3DS, whilst they also covered Aliens: Colonial Marines, Assassin's Creed III and Metro: Last Light on Wii U.
As well as the latest on the Wii U, there was also a feature on 27 broken Nintendo games that needed patching - either to fix bugs or to smooth out the difficulty curve. Another feature looked at NFC, and many different ways in which the acronym could be interpreted for use within games, such as Neat! F-Zero Customisation and Nifty Fairy Collectibles. Within the Replay section this month David Crookes looked at International Superstar Soccer, and why it was the best football game on the SNES. Within the Judgement Play section of the Vault, Mischief Makers on N64 and Wario Ware on Gamecube were approved to go in, although Plok was denied entry.
Project Zero 2 was the big review in this issue, and one of the last big games on the Wii. Tom Sykes scored it at 89%, calling it the best horror game on the Wii by some margin. Heroes of Ruin on 3DS also scored a decent 80%, with Rayman Origins also given the same score by Ben Griffin. The still playing feature looked at Kid Icarus Uprising, as Alex Dale showcased some of the things he’d found out in the four months since it was reviewed. In the online section, they also looked at the online mode from Mario Tennis Open on 3DS, as well as VVVVV, and Inchworm Animation. On Virtual Console was Kirby’s Dreamland 2, Monster World IV and Sonic Labyrinth amongst others.
