Introduction
Issue 19 was all about the year ahead as they previewed every game announced to come out in 2008. The biggest game on Wii was set to be Mario Kart, with Smash Bros Brawl hot on its heels. Wii Fit showed the Wii’s innovation possibilities and games like Okami and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles showed the depth of software that developers were beginning to unlock. The DS only had a couple of pages, but there were plenty of great games packed in, like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars: Dark Conflict. In the news there was plenty to report on the Wii’s second Christmas, as well as the launch of the quirky “Everybody’s Nintendo" channel on the Wii.
No More Heroes on Wii was the biggest review this month, as Mike Gapper gave the Japanese version 94%, there was praise for the game all round, mainly from the fact that it was unlike any other game and innovated from the first to the last minute. Geometry wars also scored 89% on Wii, as Martin praised the simplistic controls that you could easily lose hours of your life to. Link’s Crossbow training - essentially a tech demo for the Wii Zapper set in the world of Twilight Princess - scored 70%. The US version of Trauma Centre New Blood also scored 86% and there were the usual plethora of shovelware.
The feature this month looked at the top 20 Eureka Moments, basically 20 moments games that were extremely puzzling until the cogs clicked into place and the solutions were found. They covered mainly modern games, such as Mario Galaxy and its hidden stars, and the secret paths to New Super Mario Bros’ Hidden worlds.
Within World of Nintendo, the team set out their Resolutions for 2008 - which was mainly what they wanted from the games of the new year. There were even more secrets showcased for Mario Galaxy, basically random quirks of the game. They also looked at ways in which Nintendo staff spilled secrets about new games, in an attempt to predict what could be in the future. Bomberman developer Hudson Soft was showcased in the latest History Lesson of the Download section. They also mapped the overworld of Link’s Awakening as part of their Classic Level series, and showcased some of the many features of the map of this classic Zelda game. Coming full circle with the New Year theme, in the Meanwhile… section they covered the top 5 games they expected for Xbox and PS3 in 2008.
